Our Community

cityhall2007-017Baldwin City is a community of approximately 4,200 residents located just southeast of Lawrence in Douglas County. Incorporated on September 27, 1870, the city is home to the oldest university in Kansas, Baker University, which was established in 1858. This beautiful college town still features hand-laid brick streets and wonderfully preserved historic homes as well as high quality new construction in a number of new subdivisions.

More than 50 civic organizations and eight churches call Baldwin City home, and offer valuable opportunities for becoming involved in the community. There are a variety of recreational activities for children, adults and seniors. Whether you act, fish, play sports, paint, quilt, or golf, there is something for everyone. Discover why our residents enjoy calling Baldwin City home!

Interested in a day trip? We have a variety of historic sites to explore and various cultural events to experience year round. Visit the Ivan Boyd Prairie Preserve, take a ride on the Midland Railway and tour the Quayle Bible collection. There are numerous possibilities! Contact our office for help in planning a day trip for you.

Every fall the town comes alive during the third full weekend in October for the Maple Leaf Festival, which draws 20,000 to 40,000 visitors. The festival offers visitors a wide range of activities including arts & crafts booths, a parade, live music, a carnival, a quilt show and historic tours. Visit www.mapleleaffestival.com for more details about this year’s event!
