Baker is a small private university affiliated with the Methodist church. It was established in 1858 along the Santa Fe Trail and is the oldest university in Kansas. Baker’s three schools serve more than 2,000 students at various campuses: the College of Arts and Sciences at the main Baldwin campus, the School of Nursing at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center in Topeka, and the School of Professional and Graduate Studies in Overland Park, Topeka, Wichita, and Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Baldwin City is traditionally dedicated to youth and education. Programs for all ages, preschool to adult are available. Located in southern Douglas County, the 139 square mile district combines the elements of rural living, state highways and easy access to metropolitan areas to provide numerous opportunities for quality lifestyles. Unified School District 348 offers programs for children of all ages. Special Education (PEP), tutorial programs and college-release classes are a few of the opportunities available to students. All schools have received accreditation through the North Central Association process and the Kansas State Department of Education. Four schools are located in the city of Baldwin and two are in the outlying areas of Vinland and Worden communities.

With about 434 students in grades nine through twelve, the school offers an amazingly low student/teacher ratio of 15 to 1. While academics are a priority, students are encouraged to participate in extra curricular activities, such as band, theater, debate, and journalism, as well as athletics, such as football, basketball, softball, baseball, track and cross country. Built in 1995, the two-story brick and stone building provides students with modern, Internet ready classroom facilities. The school is classified as 4-A.

Adjacent to the high school, BJHS is home to approximately 330 students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade. The mission of Baldwin Junior High School is to provide students a safe learning environment with the opportunity to become responsible citizens by academically preparing them for a productive future in our society. Students consistently score above the national percentiles on the ITBS and Explore tests.

Third through fifth grade classes are offered, doing ‘whats best for kids’ in an atmosphere of high expectations and lifelong learning. Each grade level has three to four sections with an average student/teacher ratio of 19 to 1. Enrollment is about 225 students.

Kindergarten through second grade classes are offered along with PEP and the Early Childhood Center, an on-site day care/preschool program, and Rainbow Experience Preschool (594-2223), an on-site preschool program. Each grade level has three to four sections with an average student/teacher ratio of 19 to 1. Enrollment is about 246 students.

Marion Springs Elementary

Located west of Baldwin City, Marion Springs Elementary serves approximately 123 students, from the Youth Experience Success (YES) program, an on-site preschool program for 4 year olds, through 5th Grade. Marion Springs has received the Standard of Excellence in Reading for the past three years. Only eight schools in the state of Kansas received this award for three consecutive years.

The district environmental center, which features indigenous wildlife, is located there.The educational experience in this rural school utilizes an integrated curriculum centered around an eight acre environmental center. Students are given an opportunity to work together as they observe nature, conduct field studies, and develop leadership skills.

Vinland Elementary

The school is in the community of Vinland, just north of Baldwin City. Teachers use an integrated approach with the 82 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Vinland Elementary is a place where kids can go to school in a nice and hard-working environment, where they can feel safe and learn the things they need to know for their future.
