Community Conversation: Sankofa: Lessons Learned by Marla Arna Jackson

  • Lumberyard Arts Center 718 High Street Baldwin City, KS, 66006 United States (map)

Sankofa: Lessons Learned takes us on a journey through the heart and mind of world-renowned visual narrative artist, quilter and historian Marla Arna Jackson. Sankofa, in the Twi language, translates as “go back and get it”. Through her narrative portrait quilts, Jackson reaches back to knowledge gained in the past and brings it into the present as an offering toward collective progress and healing. Highlighting freedom seekers from the Civil War to Civil Rights era and beyond, Jackson’s works are created from batik and shibori-dyed cotton, wool, denim, shells, beads, seeds, sequins, feathers, acrylic paint and the fabric of her life.
